Florentine Ariosto Jones, a pioneer among American watchmakers, founded IWC Schaffhausen in 1868. IWC stands for: International Watch Company. The reason why F.A. Jones decided to open a watch company in Switzerland is the unique know-how of Swiss watchmakers. His idea was to combine mechanical production methods from the USA with the art of watchmaking in Switzerland in order to produce high-quality watches that are primarily intended for sale in the USA.
The numerous functions in the movements, combined with the restrained and clear lines of the design, are unique to IWC watches. The ladies' and men's watches have typical functions such as a tourbillon, a perpetual calendar as well as moon phases, power reserve and minute hand repetition. This combination of art and technology is the reason why the brand is so successful and could celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2018. IWC has become a very popular brand among watch enthusiasts and a global luxury brand. In the last 150 years since its foundation, many icons of watches have been introduced and today have famous names like Portuguese, aviation, Da Vinci and engineering lines.
